Bombers welcome seven players from Conference USA

The Brazos Valley Bombers announced today the addition of seven players from Conference USA to the team’s roster for the 2014 season. The players include Julius Gaines, Mike Franco and Jason Morozowski from Florida International University. Matt Blackham hails from Middle Tennessee State and University of Texas at San Antonio stand outs, Horacio Correa III, Matt Hilston, and Andre Shewcraft will also be with the Bombers this season.

The trio from University of Texas at San Antonio are positioned to have a large impact this season for the Bombers. Junior stand out Horacio Correa III returns to the Bombers looking to build on his TCL All-Star season he had in 2013. If his .281 batting average and .396 slugging percentage this spring at UTSA are any indicators then Correa will once again have a terrific summer.

Right hander Andre Shewcraft will be taking the mound for Bombers in 2014 and looks to continue the success that he is having this spring. Originally from Pearland, Texas, Shewcraft led the Pearland High School pitching staff to three district titles from 2011-2013.

Matt Hilston a red shirt this season for UTSA will be roaming the outfield for the Bombers this summer.

Pitcher Matt Blackham, originally from Lenexa, Kansas, played at Johnson County Community College before transferring to Middle Tennessee State. The junior right hander has appeared in 22 games for the Blue Raiders and has 44 strikeouts in 37 innings this season.

Julius Gaines will be playing up the middle for the Bombers this season and is having a solid season at Florida International University. Gaines is hitting .290 with a .347 slugging percentage and a .344 on base percentage this spring. While attending Luella High School in Locust Grove, Ga, Gaines was named a Baseball America Preseason All-American, Rawlings First-Team All-American and all-region first-team his senior season.

While pitching for Florida International University this spring, Mike Franco has been lights out. Winning 8 games and posting a 1.12 ERA has placed Franco among the leaders on the FIU pitching staff. As Friday night’s starting pitcher, Franco looks to add to his impressive strike out totals. For the season he has struck out 100 batters in just 88.2 innings.

Another Florida International University pitcher that will be wearing a Bombers’ jersey this summer is Jason Morozowski. As a reliever at FIU, Morozowski has been impressive. Appearing in 11 games Morozowski has struck out 14 while posting a 3.45 ERA. He played four years for Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Florida and was named second-team all-county as a junior and first-team all-country and Broward High School baseball first-team as a senior

The Bombers are members of the six-team Texas Collegiate League, one of the nation’s premier summer collegiate circuits. The Bombers begin their 30-game season on May 28 against the Acadiana Cane Cutters. The team’s home opener will take place on June 3 when the Bombers welcome the Acadiana Cane Cutters to Cellucor Field.
