Bombers Drop Bombs on Strykers in Playoff PursuitAfter being shut out last night, the Brazos Valley Bombers brought their bats to The Woodlands hitting a Bombers single game record 8 homeruns that lead to a 22-1 victory and helped push the Bombers closer to a playoff berth. The Bombers started the game off by scoring 6 runs in the first and the runs never stopped crossing the plate. The Woodlands Strykers used 5 pitchers in a run ruled ball game. The Bombers started the game off with Corey Toups taking four pitches for a walk, Toups would score on a pass ball, and that would set the tone for the pitching staff of the Strykers. James Wharton would then hit the first of eight homeruns for the Bombers, and Brennyn Smith would follow Wharton with back to back home runs. Smith’s homerun would tie the Bombers single season home run record with 5. Some clutch 2 out hitting by the Bombers and shaking defense by the Strykers, would allow the Bombers to bat around the order and put up a 6 frame in the top of the first, and give Nathan Sorenson some room to work with. Sorenson pitched 4 innings of work, only allowing one hit, with 4 strikeouts. The Strykers had no answer for Sorenson, everytime they got something going, Sorenson would make the right pitches to get out of the inning. Nick Johnson and Nick Goza , came in for relief in the final 3 innings of the run ruled game. The top of the second began with a bang, when Chris Florack hit his 3rd home run of the season on the second pitch of the at bat. The Bombers work the bases loaded and more pitching and defensive struggles from the Strykers allow two more runs to cross the plate. In the top of the 3rd inning, Wharton doubles on the first pitch of the at bat, followed by walk to Brennyn Smith. With two runners on, Brandon Wood rips a screaming line drive to the deepest part of the ballpark for 3 run shot. Jacob Rice followed with a double, and Bobby Butvin joins the party with a 2 run homer of his own to right field. The Bombers picked up where they left off in the 4th inning, when Toups doubled to lead off the inning. Brennyn Smith would come up to the plate with two outs, and would drop his second bomb of the game, his sixth on the season, and set a single season home run record for the Bombers. The Bombers would then begin to replace players, as pinch hitter Kevin Knapp would walk, and Jacob Rice would drive Knapp in on a two run blast. The Bombers 5th inning had the same feel to it as Toups lead off with a walk, and then the pinch hitter for Wharton, Brad Porras would crank the ball out of the ball park and of the scoreboard in left field for a two run bomb. The Bombers would add one more run in the inning, thanks to pass balls and walks. The sixth inning was a quiet inning for the Bombers bats, but they still managed to squeeze out one run off of passed balls and poor pitching by the Strykers battery. The 7th inning would come and go for both teams, as the game would be called due to the mercy rule. The H&R Block player of the game is Brennyn Smith, who went 3-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Smith also hit his 5th and 6th home runs to set a single season record for most home runs by a Bomber. Brennyn Smith now holds the franchise record for most home runs by a Bomber in a career. Other Bomber records broken tonight were most homeruns hit in a single game (8), most runs scored in a game (22), and biggest margin of victory (21). The Bombers return home Monday evening to host the Alexandria Aces, who are battling with the Strykers and Bombers for the two remaining playoff spots. First pitch is a 7:05, and will be Monday Feast with 50 cent hot dogs, peanuts, and popcorn brought to you by Fedstar Credit Union. That night is also Back to School Night sponsored by Gold’s Gym. The Bombers are participating in the Stuff the Bus program; anyone who brings school supplies will receive free admission into the game. The Bombers will then travel to Kilgore for a two game series with the 1st place East Texas Pump Jacks, as the Bombers try to retake the overall first place spot. The Bombers have not been in overall first since the first half of the season. The Bombers will come back to the Brazos Valley for the final regular season game against The Woodland Strykers. It will be Thirsty Thursday with dollar beer and soda brought to you by Western Beverages. The Bombers will also have their last bobblehead give away of the season, with a Gabe Bock from TexAgs bobble head given away to a few lucky fans.
