Bombers Look to Split Series with Aces

Bombers Look to Split Series with Aces

The Brazos Valley Bombers took on the Alexandria Aces tonight at American Momentum Bank Ballpark for the first of two games. The game was pretty evenly matched until the Aces scored a run late in the game to hang on for a 2-1 victory.

The Bombers offense was able to get nine hits in tonight’s game, but just could not get some lucky breaks when needed. The Bombers hit three doubles on the evening. First baseman James Wharton hit one and right fielder Myles Parma hit the other two. Wharton also hit a single in the game. The lone Bombers run came in the third inning. After Parma hit one of his doubles, shortstop Corey Toups hit a single to leftfield. When third baseman Brennyn Smith came to the plate, he belted a single that scored Parma. In the game, Parma was 2 for 5, Wharton was 2 for 3, and Brandon Wood was 2 for 4.

Luis Dejesus started on the mound for the Bombers tonight. Dejesus struggled a little tonight. Montgomery native, Logan Burch came in with two outs in the second inning and went on to pitch 3.1 innings allowing one hit and recording one strikeout. Derek Mazzio came and pitched the seventh inning and recording two strikeouts while giving up a run. New Bomber Andrew Davis and Franco Pace finished the game with each throwing one inning of relief. Davis was solid in his debut and Pace recorded two strikeouts in his inning of work. Coach Dixon named Logan Burch as the H&R Block Never Settle For Less Player of the Game.

The Bombers made some nice plays in the field during the game. In the first, Kevin Knapp made a nice catch at the leftfield wall for an out that would have been an extra base hit. In the second Smith made a nice play on a grounder and alertly threw to catcher Braden Mattson who applied the tag on a runner trying to score. Another play came in the third inning when first baseman James Wharton made a nice one handed snag on a sharply hit ball hit down the first base line that Wharton was able to turn into an out. The other was a nice 6-4-3 double play started by shortstop Nick Smelser. Smelser fielded the ball, then flipped to second baseman Corey Toups who then relayed the ball to Wharton at first.

The series with the Aces will conclude tomorrow with a Sundae Funday with $1 Sundaes and Baseball Bingo brought to you by Brazos Bingo!
