Opening Day Celebration a Lightning SuccessBryan-College Station, TX (June 2, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers 2010 season began with a bang on Wednesday night as the team celebrated New Years’ night. The evening was kicked off in style, with 2010 balloons dropping down on to the Bombers’ faithful to mark the beginning of the fourth season for the team. The team also opened the newest part of the stadium tonight, the Beer Garden presented by O’Bannon’s Taphouse. The much-anticipated Beer Garden lived up to expectation, packing in Bombers’ faithful for $1 beer all night. The game was called in the fourth inning due to lightning in the area and has been rescheduled to start at 6p.m. tomorrow as part of a double header against the expansion Texas TomCats. Fans can bring their tickets from tonight’s game to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark tomorrow to be re-admitted at no cost. The Bombers had just solved the pitching of TomCats ace Zach Oates when the game was called with one out in the fourth. Oates had a perfect game going against the home team until he walked Josh McElroy to open the inning. Blinn star Isaac Nuti moved McElroy over on a sacrifice bunt, then Morgan Mickan drove a single to right field, scoring McElroy. The game was called immediately after the run scored for threat of lightning. Bombers’ starting pitcher Levi Saenz struck out four of the first five batters he faced, working four scoreless innings. Saenz looked to be in trouble in the fourth until second baseman Cory Stooksbury made an outstanding play in shallow right field, fielding a difficult ground ball and zipping it to the first baseman Wes Patterson to get the big lefty out of the jam. Saenz looks to be a solid top of the rotation option for Head Coach Brent Alumbaugh this season. The evening was one of firsts for the Bombers. For the first time in history the team started a season at home. Also, the Bombers have now had their first rain delay, and will have their first double header of the young season tomorrow. The team will be back and ready for action on Thirsty Thursday. Every Thursday brings fans their choice of $1 beer and wine, as well as $0.50 soft drinks all night long. Be sure to make it out to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark tomorrow, June 3, for Thirsty Thursday and the official Bombers’ season-opening double-header against the Texas TomCats. |
