The Brazos Valley Bombers defeated the Coppell Copperheads 5-1 to collect their third consecutive victory and inch closer in the standings to Texas Collegiate League leader McKinney. It was Thirsty Thursday night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, which was hopping with excitement as nearly one thousand fans came to cheer on the Bombers.
Brazos Valley jumped on top early after Cliff Vaughn drove a two-out pitch from Josh Thomason into left field, scoring Todd Cunningham and Zach Grichor to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead. The Bombers got things going again in the 3rd inning, as Zach Grichor tripled and scored on Trey Sperring’s groundout. Bombers scored twice more in the fourth inning, taking advantage of Thomason’s inability to find the strike zone, to extend their lead to 5-0. Jim McGonigle was fantastic all night long, limiting the Copperheads to four scattered hits and just one run in seven innings as he picked up his second win of the season.
With the crowd clapping and on their feet, Travis Dirk confidently struck out the side in the 9th inning to complete the win. Zach Grichor was the College Station Orthopaedics Player of the Game, after going 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs, and three walks to lead the team. The Bombers will conclude the two-game series with Coppell tomorrow on Fireworks Friday Night, sponsored by the Plaza Hotel.
