Bombers Battle Back in the 8th to Secure First Win of the Season Against AcadianaBryan-College Station, Texas (June 2, 2022)- The Bombers secure their 1st win of the 2022 season in their home opener at Edible Field against the Acadiana Cane Cutters. After a great pitching battle from both sides through the majority of the game, the Bombers put up 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th after trailing by two and easily put away the Cane Cutters in the top of the 9th to get their first mark in the win column.
The Cane Cutters came running out of the gates in the top of the 1st inning. After loading the bases with the first three batters, the Cane Cutters scored two easy runs off a throwing error to 1st from 2nd Baseman Travis Chestnut in an effort to turn a double play. Bombers starting pitcher Cinoon Bak was able to strike out two in a row to get the blue and navy out of an early sticky situation and keep the score 0-2 Cane Cutters.
The Bombers went hitless through three innings until center fielder Brandon Bishop found a hole right down the middle for a single. After Bishop stole 2nd, the next batter Mike Adair followed his lead with a similar hit up the middle, able to drive home Bishop off an RBI single to reduce Acadiana's lead to one.
The Bombers were able to break up the monotony of this pitching slugfest in the bottom of the 6th thanks to a high arching pop up off the bat of Travis Chestnut being dropped in the short outfield to get a Bombers runner on base. Kameron Weil was able to drive him home with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at two apiece.
All three of the first Bomber pitchers, Cinoon Bak, Gabe Craig, and Christian Clack tallied up 5 strikeouts a piece, holding their opponents to 3 hits through 7 innings. Leaving the ballgame to be decided in the 8th and 9th inning.
The visiting Cane Cutters struck the first blow in the top of the 8th, scoring off a well-hit ball down the 3rd baseline by Acadiana’s 3rd baseman Landon Manson. They laid on a 2nd run in the 8th off a sacrifice fly to right field by Cole Stromboe to bring home Manson.
After Bombers’ batters, Dillion Flores and Davis Powell are both hit by pitches and take their base, Chestnut hits into a fielder's choice that allowed Flores to score from 2nd. The runs kept coming for the bombers. Powell scored off a grounding error hit by Bishop to the shortstop to tie the game. Kade Fletcher, who came in at catcher in the 6th inning, hit a massive RBI double to drive home Kameron Weil for the first Bombers lead of the game! Right fielder Brayden Evans kept things rolling, putting the navy and gold up by two by hitting into a fielder's choice. Thankfully the fielder chose not to throw to home and let Bishop score the Bombers' 4th run of the inning.
A quick three outs in the top of the 9th inning, a putout at 1st, an incredible leaping catch by Bombers’ 2nd baseman Chestnut, and a strike out by Colton Taylor, gave the Bombers their first win of the season and an exciting home opener to get the Brazos Valley fans ready for what the season has to offer!
Opening day of Edible Field ended in a victory for the Bombers thanks to an incredible 8th inning and a strong defensive effort in the 9th to keep the Cane Cutters from making any kind of comeback. Neither team will get much rest before their rematch tomorrow night at Edible Field Friday, June 3rd. We hope to see you back at the ballpark tomorrow night for “Like A Boss Night” and our awesome Friday night firework show!
