Bombers Fall Again on Fireworks Friday

Bryan/College Station, TX - June 14, 2019 - The Brazos Valley Bombers celebrated another Fireworks Friday at Travis Field, but the cause for celebration was lacking as the home team fell to the Texarkana Twins 3-2 to record their third straight loss of the season.

The Bombers faced the Twins for the third time in three days, this game being the first game played against Texarkana at home. After a drubbing from the Twins on Wednesday, the Bombers once again fell victim to a rising Twins team in extra innings on Thursday.

The situation looked positive for the Bombers early in the game as they leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning off the bats of Chase Kemp and Bryant Shellenbarger. The Twins were able to even the score in the top of the fourth inning on a fielding error and sacrifice fly from the Bombers.

Tyler Flores started on the mound for the Bombers Friday night. The TAMU-Kingsville product pitched six innings, struck out three Twins and only allowed a single earned run. Bryce Bennett entered the game in relief of Flores in the seventh inning, his first outing in a Bombers uniform this season. Bennett went two, recording a pair of strikeouts in the eighth inning.

College Station native John Altman finished out the effort on the bump. A controversial call by the second-base umpire allowed the Twins to keep Taylor Smith on the base paths in the top of the ninth inning.

“It was a bad call,” said Manager Brian Nelson. “He got it wrong. It is what it is. I’m not going to cover for him. He made a bad call, and unfortunately, that call had a pretty significant impact on a really good baseball game.”

Smith would score the go-ahead run to lift the Twins over the Bombers.

This marked the second Fireworks Friday for the Bombers on the 2019 season. Travis Field will host one more fireworks display this year on August 9.

The Bombers drop to 10-3 with this loss.

Cole Coker, who had been an integral part of the Bombers record-setting 10-0 start, believes the timing for a three-game skid for the Bombers may provide a boost for the team.

“I think it’s better for this to happen early,” said Coker postgame. “Right now, we’re struggling at the plate, offensively, and I think this is just going to come to motivate us.”

The Bombers tie the Victoria Generals for first place in the Texas Collegiate League as the Generals improve to 10-3 with a 11-3 win over the Baton Rouge Rougarou Friday night.

On Saturday night, the Bombers will host Bark in the Park Night! Children can enter and eat for free thanks to the generosity of the Bryan Animal Clinic and Chicken Express.
