Bombers Escape Rougarou 8-7 in Extra Innings

Baton Rouge, LA - June 2, 2019 - Despite a resounding effort by the Baton Rouge Rougarou, the Brazos Valley Bombers held on in extra innings in an 8-7 victory to remain undefeated through their first three games.

Tyler Flores saw action as the starting pitcher on Sunday, tossing three strikeouts in four and a half innings. The Rougarou had an opportunity to score off Flores in the first inning, but Brayden Morrow’s long bomb to left field hooked just foul. Flores controlled the Rougarou’s batters through most of his appearance, only allowing two hits until the fifth inning.

The Bombers offense scored first for the first time this season, establishing a 2-0 lead in the first three innings of the game.

Both the Bombers and the Rougarou saw offensive explosions mid-way through Sunday’s game. In the top of the fifth, Tyler Smith and Ridge Rogers opened the inning with singles, and Smith was sent home quickly on a single from Logan Sartori. Cole Coker was next up to the plate, recording his third hit in his third at-bat on the day and allowing Rogers and Sartori to score to put the Bombers up 5-0. Jordan Yeatts would record another RBI on the inning to get Coker home and extend the Bombers lead to 6-0.

Flores kicked off the fifth inning by striking Carson Clowers of the Rougarou with an inside pitch. A subsequent double to left field put Clowers in scoring position with no outs on the board, and Flores walked the next batter to load the bases. The Rougarou would score their first two runs of the ballgame before Flores came off the mound.

Brian Williams made his second appearance of the week as he relieved Flores mid-inning. The Rougarou would drive in two more runs before the end of the inning to erase most of the Bombers sizable lead in one of the longest innings the Bombers have seen this season.

Dontae Woodard took the mound for the Bombers in the sixth and delivered three strikeouts in a row to contrast the length of the preceding inning.

The Rougarou tied the game at six apiece in the bottom of the seventh, and the Bombers sent in Henry Bird to stave off the Rougarou rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Zach DeLeon made his second appearance of the season as a closer for the Bombers. DeLeon was credited with the save against Acadiana on Friday and successfully held off the Rougarou on Sunday, taking the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, the Bombers got aggressive to try and pull ahead. Yeatts stole second and advanced to third on a misstep by the Rougarou before trying to take home on Kemp’s at-bat. Yeatts was gunned down at the plate, but Jacob Padilla sent the next one to the outfield wall to send Chase Kemp around for the go-ahead score. Cam Haller drove in Padilla to cement an 8-6 lead for the Bombers.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Rougarou loaded the bases in an attempt to threaten the Bombers undefeated season, but the Bombers defense allowed just a single run before closing out the game with three men on base. DeLeon is credited with the win.

The Bombers improve to 3-0 and keep the Baton Rouge Rougarou winless in their inaugural season. The Bombers and Rougarou will face off again on Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
