Bombers Down Cane Cutters 7-3 to Sweep Opening Series

Youngsville, LA - June 1, 2019 - The offense shines for the Brazos Valley Bombers as they take down the Acadiana Cane Cutters to sweep their 2019 opening series. The Bombers record 10 hits on their way to a 7-3 victory in their second game of the season.

As was the case in Friday’s game, the Cane Cutters drew first blood, getting Fisher Norris into home on a passed ball in the bottom of the second, but the defense held for the Bombers through most of the game.

Christian Vega made the start for the Bombers and pitched five innings, striking out five batters and keeping the Cane Cutters honest from the mound. Vega allowed a lone run on just five hits. First baseman Chase Kemp made several athletic plays throughout the night to prevent the Cane Cutters from establishing any offensive rhythm.

The Bombers regained the lead early, jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a two-run RBI triple by Jordan Yeatts to mirror Friday’s early lead change.

Catcher Jacob Padilla found himself irresistible to pitches against Acadiana, hit by pitches thrown by Cane Cutters starting pitcher Gage Trahan and reliever Nick Hill. Padilla became the first Bomber hit by pitch this season, but Kyle Bergeron joined the hit-by-pitch club shortly thereafter. Kemp would also take an outside pitch to the knee in the top of the eighth inning by Acadiana’s Bailey Hargrave.

Padilla would find home for the second time in two games on an RBI single by Logan Sartori. Padilla scored yet again late in the game off a bunt by Ridge Rogers.

The bats remained hot for the Bombers as Tyler Smith found himself in scoring position after a single, a stolen base and a misstep by Cane Cutters catcher Zach Mazur. Smith recorded his first stolen base of the year on his first attempt. Rogers recorded the RBI to send Smith home and would make it home himself after a stolen base and an RBI from Cole Coker. Coker was electric early, recording three hits in his first four at-bats, a stolen base and the RBI to send Rogers home.

Joe Buckendorff came in relief of Vega in the sixth inning. Buckendorff, who is coming off of a year-long recovery for Tommy John surgery, got off to a rough start. The Cane Cutters began to rally in the sixth, scoring off a two-run RBI single by Cordell Bowie, but the Bombers were able to control the game and end the inning with three men on.

Brian Williams entered the game to pitch for the Bombers in the top of the seventh and recorded three strikeouts.

Yeatts was forced home when Kemp was struck by Hargrave in the eighth, widening the Bombers lead to 7-3. Cole Sichley took the mound in the final inning and struck out three batters as the Bombers closed out their second victory in two games.

The Bombers improve to 2-0 as they head northeast to face the embattled Baton Rouge Rougarou.
