Extra Innings Bring Extra Excitement in 12-11 Bombers Victory

On Friday night at American Momentum Bank Ballpark the Bombers turn the theme of “Turn Back the Clock” to heart by channeling The Comeback Kid for a solid eleven innings. Despite a very rocky start, the Bombers prevailed and showed the Woodlands what the Brazos Valley is really made of.

The Woodlands struck early by bringing in one in the first on a single and an error. Offensive errors continued to plague Brazos Valley in the fourth, allowing four more runs to come in for the Strykers. In the bottom of the fourth the Bombers were finally able to stir up some trouble when designated hitter Alexis Mercado reached on a single then was later brought in on a single by catcher Jake Henson. Center fielder Blake Kopetsky was also able to reach on a single and score on a fielder’s choice up the middle by shortstop Matt Eureste. After four the Bombers trailed the Strykers 5-2.

The top of the sixth brought more trouble for the Bombers as the Woodlands were able to add two more to the board, then an additional three in the top of the seventh. Trailing by eight headed into the bottom of the seventh, Brazos Valley stepped up to the plate to bring in left fielder Brett Kauten on a double to center by Kopetsky. Later, Eureste was able to smack a single up the middle that brought in both Mercado and Kopetsky. After seven innings the Bombers had closed the gap slightly but still fell behind the Strykers 10-5.

Both teams were able to chalk another one to their scores in the eighth. Second baseman Horacio Correa III reached on a single up the middle and was later brought in on a sac fly by Kauten. After holding the Strykers in the top of the ninth, Brazos Valley worked up a rally that was led by a solo homerun over left by Henson. After Eureste, Correa, and McLendon were able to load the bases, Kauten took a walk to bring in a run. On the next batter, first baseman Hunter Melton took a ball to the back to bring in Correa and close the gap to 11-10. Kopetsky then came to the plate and riled up the excitement by slamming a single up the middle to bring in Kauten to tie the game. Melton rounded third to make an attempt at the winning run but was gunned down at home to force the game into extra innings.

Bomber pitcher Jason Freeman came to the mound in the tenth to retire The Woodlands with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the tenth the winning run was thrown out at home for the Bombers for the second inning in a row, sending the game on to the eleventh tied at eleven. In the top of the inning the Strykers went three up three down to once again send in the Bombers. With one out, G.R. Hinsley approached the plate with a full count and rocked a solo homerun over the left center wall to bring home the Brazos Valley victory. Freeman earned the win on the mound with no hits and two strikeouts. Other pitchers for the Bombers included Aggie Parker Ray, who went six innings with six hits and four strikeouts, Caleb Hawkins, who made an appearance in the seventh, and Logan Burch, with two hits and three strikeouts.
