Bombers Head to Kilgore to Take On The Pump Jacks After Victory Over Marshals
The Bombers started their two game roadtrip tonight at Allen High School for one game with the Marshals before heading to Driller Park in Kilgore to take on the Pump Jacks tomorrow night. The Marshals took an early 2-0 lead, but the Bombers settled down and went on to win 7-4.
The Bombers offense scored its first run in the second inning. Shortstop Nick Smelser got on base by being hit by a pitch. He was sacrified to second on a groundout by second baseman Corey Toups. However Smelser would come home to score as it was ruled that the Marshal first baseman did not have his foot on the bag. The first baseman flipped the ball back to the mound, but Smelser came home and scored in the confusion. In the top of the fourth inning, the Bombers go two runs. Both third baseman Brennyn Smith and catcher Braden Mattson hit singles to center field. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Smelser. Toups would hit an infield single that scored Smith and Mattson would score on a groundout by catcher Kevin Lamb. Smelser hit a single to left center and would come home to score on a infield single by center fielder Chris Florack. The Bombers' fifth and sixth runs came in the eighth inning when pinch runners Jordan Hammerman and Kevin Knapp scored on a play that had two Marshal errors involved in it. The Bombers would get their seventh run in the ninth inning on a standup double by designated hitter Braden Mattson which scored James Wharton who led the inning off with a single to centerfield.
Lefty Andrew Godail started on the mound for the Bombers tonight. Godail looked a bit shaky at first but straightened out as the game went on. On the night Godail pitched seven solid innings while recording five strikeouts. Logan Burch then followed Godail and pitched two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout. Pace came in to finish the final one-third of the inning retiring the Marshal batter he faced. Nick Johnson came in and pitched a well executed ninth inning to earn his second save in two nights.
The Bombers defense made outstanding plays once again to help the pitching staff. Chris Florack made a couple. The first one was when he caught a flyball, then was alert to notice that the Marshal runner did not tag up, and threw to Wharton at first for a double play. The other came in the seventh inning when Chris had to run a good distance to the centerfield fall and catch up a sharply hit ball to record an out.
