Kilgore, TX (July 13, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers defeated the East Texas Pump Jacks 1-0 Wednesday night thanks to strong pitching by Nick Fleece and Matt Passauer and a sacrifice fly by Morgan Mickan. With the win the Bombers moved their lead in the Texas Collegiate League standings to one full game over the Victoria Generals.
The Bombers rode the pitching of Nick Fleece for six innings. Fleece worked six scoreless, allowing just two hits and no walks, and striking out eight. He got all the help he needed in the second inning when Morgan Mickan brought home Ryan Morrow with a sacrifice fly to right field to open up a 1-0 lead.
The fifth inning was the only other inning in which a Bomber reached base, but the lack of offense was no problem for the team thanks to some clutch pitching. The Pump Jacks moved men into scoring position in the first and seventh, but their biggest threat came in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs Passauer came into the game, striking out Brandon wood to end the threat. He earned the save, striking out the last two men he faced.
The Bombers will square off against the Alexandria Aces in Alexandria tomorrow night and will be back in action at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Kids Free Saturday against the Victoria Generals. All kids will get in for free, eat for free, and play for free in the Kids Zone all night.
