Bombers Ride Strong Pitching to First Home Win

Bryan-College Station, TX (June 10, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers celebrated Strike Out Cancer night in fashion, winning their first home game of the season, 5-0. The evening was a celebration of victory over cancer and over the Texas Collegiate League leading McKinney Marshals.

The game got started with cancer survivor Cindy Zdunkewicz tossing out the ceremonial first pitch. Then, players from the Little League’s Challenger teams joined the Bombers on the field as the rosters were announced. The Bombers’ faithful received cancer awareness wristbands as they came in to the stadium, and were able to donate blood in the Brazos Valley Blood Bank bus before the game. Over 1100 fans enjoyed the first Thirsty Thursday of the season, taking advantage of $1 beer and $0.50 soft drinks all night long. They were in for a treat, as the Bombers gave the leagues’ top team fits for nine long innings.

The home team got the offense going early, with Isaac Nuti scoring Greg Olson on an RBI groundout in the first. Rodarrick Jones drove in Morgan Mickan three batters later to bring the score to 2-0 Bombers. In the second, Cory Stooksbury scored on an Olson single to make the score 3-0. The Bombers added two more in the third, with Tanner Toal scoring on Jones’ second RBI single of the night, and then Jones was plated by a Stooksbury single to push the score to 5-0. The Bombers didn’t threaten again on the evening, but didn’t need to thanks to some excellent pitching.

Bombers’ starter Michael Hilliard was brilliant tonight, pitching seven strong frames against the Marshals. Hilliard held the visiting team to just one hit and struck out seven batters on the evening. Reliever Matt Passauer picked up right where Hilliard left off, striking out two in the eighth and working a scoreless ninth to get the Bombers their first home win of the season on a combined one-hitter.

The Bombers move to 2-4 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow night against the Victoria Generals on Cars and World Cup night. The Bombers will host the Model-T club of the Brazos Valley and celebrate the opening of the FIFA World Cup, and will wrap up the night with the first Fireworks Friday of the season. Be sure to make it out to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark tomorrow night for all the fun.
