Bombers Finalize Coaching StaffReturning Head Coach Brent Alumbaugh is joined by two new assistants, Ben Gallego and Arturo Chomp Velasquez.
Bryan-College Station, TX (March 24, 2010) The Brazos Valley Bombers announced today that they have finalized their coaching staff for the 2010 season with the addition of two new assistants, Ben Gallego and Arturo Chomp Velasquez. Head coach Brent Alumbaugh provides stability for the organization as he returns for his fourth consecutive summer with the team. After serving as the assistant coach to Kevin Moulder in the Bombers 2007 inaugural season, Alumbaugh has been head coach for the past two seasons, leading the Bombers to their first playoff win in 2008. He is currently in his second season as an assistant coach at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas. He has also been an associate scout for the New York Yankees since January of 2009. Alumbaugh came to Oak Ridge by way of Franklin, Tennessee, where he served as the head coach at Franklin High School from 2003 through 2008. During his time at Franklin, the Auburndale, Florida native posted an overall record of 145-65 (.691) and went 83-33 (.716) in district play. The Rebels claimed District Championships in 2006 and 2008, Regional Championships in 2007 and 2008, and Sectional Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007. They also made State Tournament appearances in three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2007, including the schools first trip in the schools 95-year history. Gallego joins the Bombers staff as the pitching coach while beginning his first stint in the Texas Collegiate League. He has coached and worked with players on various levels, including little and senior league, high school, college and professional baseball. Last season he served as pitching coach and director of pro personnel for the Big Bend Cowboys of the Continental Baseball League. While at Big Bend, two pitchers on staff were selected as league all stars, one being the league leader in overall strikeouts. Five pitchers went on to sign contracts with higher-level organizations. In addition to his current teaching and coaching profession in Bryan, Gallego serves as a personal hitting and pitching instructor, as well as an associate scout for the Houston Astros. When the summer baseball schedule allows, he hosts his own personal baseball camp in his hometown of Alpine, Texas, where he played high school baseball for legendary West Texas coach Mike Pallanez. Velasquezs addition forms the Bombers first-ever coaching triumvirate. Also a coach for the Big Bend Cowboys last season, Chomp brings a vast array of playing and coaching experience to the table for the Bombers. After playing at Vernon Regional Junior College, Velasquez went on to play a vital role at Sul Ross State University, garnering All-Conference honors as a shortstop. He was also named in the Texas-Louisiana Professional League Rookie of the Year in 1998. No stranger to summer collegiate baseball, Velasquez served as the position players and base running coach for the Madison Mallards in 2005 and 2006, before moving back to the professional ranks in 2007. He worked as the bench coach for the Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League until 2008, before moving on to his most recent position with Cowboys. With the experience and knowledge provided by the Bombers newest coaching staff, the team is primed to make a run at its first Texas Collegiate League Championship. |
