Former Brazos Valley Bombers center fielder Todd Cunningham was presented with the Robert A. McNeece award last week, which is given to the most outstanding pro prospect in the Cape Cod League.
Although he was coming off his freshman year, Todd Cunningham quickly made a name for himself last season with the Bombers, setting the team-record with a .310 batting average. He also led the team with 44 hits and had 13 stolen bases.
Cunningham followed up his fantastic summer with another stellar season at Jacksonville State and received an invitation to play in the famed Cape Cod League, which is located in Massachusetts.
The Cape Cod League, which began play in 1885, is widely considered to be the premier summer collegiate baseball league. Currently, over 1,000 Cape Cod alumni are playing baseball professionally, with over 200 playing on MLB rosters, including superstars Evan Longoria, Lance Berkman, Mark Teixeira and Jason Bay.
Cunningham received the prestigious award after leading the league with a .378 batting average. He also received the Thurman Munson Batting Champion Award for his efforts.
The Robert A. McNeece award is especially distinguished, because it is chosen by pro scouts who try to determine who will make the biggest impact in the major leagues.
Cunningham will be returning to Jacksonville State for his junior season this upcoming year and will attempt to lead the Gamecocks to new heights as they try to build off the success of the past two years.
