The Brazos Valley Bombers season came to a close tonight, as they were defeated by the Victoria Generals 13-2. With the win, the Generals earned a 2-0 sweep of Brazos Valley and advanced to the Texas Collegiate League championship round.
The Bombers had wins’ leader Drew Flaniken on the mound, but they were unable to stop the hot Victoria bats. Flaniken pitched well the first three innings, as he gave up just two runs, but the floodgates burst open in the fourth.
The Generals scored six runs on Flaniken before he was able to record an out and tallied nine runs in the inning to take an 11-0 lead.
Victoria extended the lead to 13-0 in the seventh and looked to be headed for their second consecutive shutout against the Bombers. Brazos Valley was finally able to get on board in the seventh inning with one run as John Cannon scored.
The loss marked the third consecutive year that the Bombers were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs.
Despite their struggles at the end of the summer, the 2009 season was a successful one that included several new records on the field, as well as the league attendance record which was set on July 3.
