The Victoria Generals handed the Brazos Valley Bombers a 4-0 loss in the opener of the best-of-three playoff series tonight at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark. The highlight of the night preceded the game, as one lucky lady came home with a half carat diamond and 24 others won blue topazes in the Montelongo’s Diamond Derby.
In addition to the Diamond Derby, fans had the opportunity to enjoy a three-dimension Bombers cake courtesy of Fabulous Fare.
Aaron Daab pitched magnificently for the Bombers, as he battled Covey Morrow for five innings and only surrendered one unearned run.
The Bombers had an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth inning, as they had runners on second and third with only one out, but Wes Schill was double off at second base after Casey Dykes grounded out.
The pitcher’s duel lasted until the eighth inning, when the Generals added two runs to take a 3-0 lead.
The Generals added one more run in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach for the Bombers, who were unable to manage any offensive production against Morrow and Tom Filip.
Casey Dykes and Joaquin Hinojosa both had singles in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Cliff Vaughn popped out to end the game for the Bombers.
Brazos Valley will try to even the series tomorrow with Drew Flaniken on the hill in Victoria.
