Joaquin Hinojosa homered and then came into pitch the ninth inning as the Brazos Valley Bombers shut out the Victoria Generals 3-0 tonight at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark. Hinojosa tied the Bombers’ all-time home run record with his fourth home run of the season.
Much like the previous night, the game was a pitcher’s duel early on, as Aaron Daab and Covey Morrow battled it out for the first several innings. Daab, who was on a 65-pitch limit as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery, pitched four scoreless innings and struck out five.
The Bombers finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning, as Clifton Thomas stole third base and advanced home after an errant throw by the Generals catcher Zach Briggs. Hinojosa then homered deep over the left field fence to put the Bombers ahead 2-0.
Brazos Valley was able to tack on another run in the following inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Garrett Fanchier was remarkable in relief, retiring 10 straight batters at one point to earn his fourth win of the season.
Hinojosa struck out one in the ninth inning to collect his sixth save of the season as the Bombers improved to 19-21 with the win. They ended the Generals’ seven game winning streak and came away with a series split.
The Bombers will face off against the Coppell Copperheads tomorrow as they try to move closer to clinching a playoff spot.
