Copperheads Bite Bombers

Box Score

The Brazos Valley Bombers put plenty of runs up on the board, but were unable to overcome the strong hitting of Coppell, as the Copperheads outlasted the Bombers for a 13-8 victory.

After only managing five hits in the first game of the season, the Bombers got off to a quick start, scoring one run in the first inning on Joaquin Hinojosa’s RBI single. Coppell was not to be outdone, however, as they burst out of the floodgates with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The Bombers cut the lead to 4-2 in the second inning after Joe Craven advanced all the way around from first base on three passed balls to score.

Coppell doubled its run total in the third inning, scoring four more to make it 8-2. The Bombers would not go down easily, as they mounted a rally in the fifth inning. Wes Schill hit a two-run single, scoring Drew Mason and John Hale to cut the score to 8-4. Clifton Thomas and Hinojosa followed with two more RBI singles as the Bombers made it an 8-6 ballgame.

The Bombers came within one run an inning later after Thomas got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Craven. Coppell was able to avoid any further damage and got Jesse Payne to groundout to end the inning. Jordan Inhoff hit a solo home run for the Copperheads the following inning and then Coppell scored four more in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

Schill enjoyed a big night for the Bombers, collecting two hits, two RBI and scoring a run in the loss. Hinojosa, Craven and Mason also had two hits apiece for the Bombers, who fell to 0-2 with the loss.

The Bombers will return back home tomorrow for Fan Fest, which will take place at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark at 5 pm. In addition to various festivities that include a home run derby, several live bands will be playing as the Bombers get ready to kick off their home opener on Tuesday.

The Bombers have a busy week ahead of them, with Cashback Tuesday, Margaritaville Wednesday, Thirsty Thursday and Fireworks Friday all on the slate. Fans will have an opportunity to win up to $1100 on Tuesday with a variety of contests and giveaways as the Bombers face off in a rematch with the Marshals.  Former Texas A&M football coach Jackie Sherrill will be throwing out the first pitch during Wednesday’s $2 Margarita night, which precedes the fan-favorite $1 Beer Thirsty Thursday night. Fireworks Friday wraps up the week, as fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a fireworks show immediately following the game. The Texas Touring Ts Club will be making a special appearance Friday as well, providing fans with a opportunity to see several original Model-T cars, which will be at the ballpark for the game.
