Wearing green jerseys on a night of festivities that included a live auction of the jerseys and Freebirds for a year, the Bombers lost 1-0 to the McKinney Marshals in a pitcher’s duel. Jerseys were sold for prices ranging between $65 and $150 which benefited a youth beautification project in College Station.
The Marshals got the only run they would need in the first at-bat of the ballgame, as Joe Oliveira drove a pitch from Sam Strickland off the left field foul pole for a home run. The two opposing pitchers then stole the show, battling inning after inning without budging. Jimmy Nelson of the Marshals was magnificent, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out nine Bomber hitters to keep the Marshals in the lead. Strickland was even more impressive after Oliveira’s home run, not giving up any hits for eight innings as he kept pace with Nelson.
The Bombers threatened several times with runners in scoring position, but were unable to get that vital run in to home plate. Ryan Doyle pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the save for the Marshals, who improved to a league-best 11-6 with the win. The Bombers will conclude their two-game series with the Marshals tomorrow on Sunday Bingo Night at the ballpark.
