Bombers Mount Five-Run Comeback to Defeat Cane Cutters

LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (June 17, 2021) —On the final night of a week-long road trip, the Brazos Valley Bombers secured a 15-9 comeback victory over the Acadiana Cane Cutters.

Having lost three of the team’s last four matchups, including their last two, the Bombers found themselves in a large hole to start Thursday’s game. After falling behind in the first two innings, the navy and gold mounted an unbelievable seven-run seventh inning en-route to the largest comeback win of the summer. The team can now set its sight on the upcoming Fireworks Friday at Edible Field.

Right-handed pitcher Andrew Hill appeared on the mound for the Bombers in his second start on the road trip. Hill struggled in just over an inning of work, facing nine batters and surrendering four runs. Jake Strmiska came in as relief, allowing an additional run and nothing more. The 6-foot-7 right hander Tyler Miller had his longest outing of the summer, working three innings and doing his part to keep his team in the game.

Aided by the help of three walks, a sacrifice fly by Troy Viola and a Grayson Tatrow two-run single, Brazos Valley started the uphill climb to get back in the ballgame in the third inning. Brett Squires, Hudson Polk and Alex Vergara were able to cross home plate, pushing the deficit to 5-3.

Failing to capitalize on a scoring threat in the fifth inning, shortstop Bobby Lada led off the sixth inning with his second home run of the summer, cutting the Acadiana lead to a mere one run.

The Bombers flipped the script in the seventh inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Going from down 5-4 to up 11-5, the Bombers scratched seven runs, tying their season-high for runs in an inning.

With second baseman Casey Sunseri’s single in the eighth inning, every Bomber safely reached first base on Thursday night, marking the first time this unique feat has been accomplished for a lineup that has struggled recently.

A productive ninth inning tacked on three more for the Bombers, setting the final score at 15-9. With that, the Brazos Valley finished 2-3 on the road trip around the Bayou State.

After the long away stint, Brazos Valley returns to Edible Field on Friday, June 18th for the start of a two-game set against the league-leaders San Antonio Flying Chanclas. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday’s Nurses Appreciation Night will feature festivities celebrating essential medical workers in the community, culminating in a world-famous fireworks show.
