Full Moon Casts Shadow On Bombers In Loss To Deputies

The Brazos Valley Bombers fought through the recent torrential rain and then the blazing heat to ensure Saturday night’s game against the Duncanville Deputies was played, especially since all other games in the Texas Collegiate League were cancelled. Unfortunately, that left the team with little fight come game time, and the Bombers dropped an 11-2 decision at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark.

The Deputies jumped on Bombers starter Scooter Hicks (2-2) early, chasing him from the game in the third inning. Hicks went just 2.2 innings and surrendered six hits and seven runs, though only four of them were earned.

Clint Helms came on in relief of Hicks and got out of the jam, but didn’t fare better in later innings. Duncanville added a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning to open up an insurmountable 11-0 lead.

The full moon certainly affected the Bombers fielding, which proved to be their undoing on Saturday night. Brazos Valley posted a season-high seven errors, leading to five unearned runs.

The Bombers offense showed life in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs. TJ Mittelstaedt walked and Blake Walker doubled, bringing Doug Simmons to the plate. The first baseman hit a roller that resulted in an error on the Deputies shortstop, allowing both runners to score.

The B’s bullpen also came on to stop the bleeding. Adam Albright pitched two scoreless innings, followed by a pair of shutout frames from Brice Ary.

At the plate, the Bombers posted five hits. In addition to Walker’s double, Daman Aaron, Will Basom, Ryan Weber, and Kyle Sisney each chalked up singles.

The Bombers return to the field on Sunday afternoon for another Bombers Kids Club Sunday. The first 100 kids through the gate will receive a D-Bat mini-bate with the Bombers logo laser engraved on the barrel, sponsored by Mix 104.7.

After another two games on the road, the Bombers will be back to celebrate America on July 4 at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark. The Bombers will take on the Wichita Falls Roughnecks in a special mid-week afternoon game beginning at 3 pm.
