Correa III hits walk-off double, sends Bombers to deciding game three in TCL Championship

Shortstop Horacio Correa III went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI with a walk-off double Tuesday.

Bryan-College Station, TX (August 11, 2014) – Rallying from a late deficit, the Brazos Valley Bombers defeated the Victoria Generals in walk-off fashion Monday night in game two of the Texas Collegiate League Championship on a two-run double from shortstop Horacio Correa III. The win evens the series at 1-1 and induces a deciding game three.

“I can’t say enough about this club, not just tonight but the whole year,” head coach Curt Dixon said. “Even in the dog days of July, when we’ve already clinched and it’s hot out here, these guys fight till the last out and you saw that tonight. I’ve been coaching for six years, been in baseball for 20 years—that’s up there in my top finishes in a game. Hats off to Horacio Correa III, one of the best players I’ve ever had the pleasure to coach.”

The Bombers struck first in the game, scoring a run on the bottom of the first on a single by catcher Tucker Pennell. However, the Generals would respond in the top of the second and tie the game at 1-1.

The Bombers would retake the lead in the fifth inning as Correa III scored on an error by the Victoria second baseman on a ground ball from first baseman G.R. Hinsley. Once again however, the Generals would come back and tie the game, this time in the top of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Victoria would take a 3-2 lead, maintaining the narrow spread until the ninth inning. Third baseman Hunter Hagler would walk to lead off the bottom of the frame and steal his way to second, giving the Bombers a runner in scoring position with no outs. After a fly out by center fielder Matt Hilston, Hagler would advance to third base on a groundout by second baseman Jimmy Norris, bringing left fielder Ford Moore to the plate with two outs. Moore would walk on four pitches, bringing Correa III to the plate with runners on the corners. With a 1-1 count, Correa III would spray a double to the left-center gap that would get deep enough to score both Hagler and Moore all the way from first, giving the Bombers the comeback victory they needed to send the series to a winner-take-all final.

“I knew throughout the game we were going up and down, up and down,” Correa III said. “In the end I think we were just more strong mentally and I felt like we were going to overcome the situation at the end.”

The Bombers will play their rubber match with the Generals Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Cellucor Field. The winner of the game will go down as the 2014 TCL Champion.

“It’s the last game of the year, two great teams—winner gets to dog pile, winner gets a championship, winner gets a ring—and in our case we get to go try to be the first TCL team to ever win back-to-back titles,” Dixon said. “It’s what you live for and it’s what these kids bust their tail for all summer long.”
