Bryan-College Station, TX (July 11, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (24-9) defeated the Acadiana Cane Cutters (17-15) 6-2 Friday night, splitting the two game series.
Down 1-0 early, the Bombers tied the game 2-2 in the third inning behind base hits from shortstop Horacio Correa III and center fielder Matt Hilston.
The Bombers took the lead in the fifth inning following two base hits by Hilston and first baseman G.R. Hinsley, allowing two earned runs to cross home plate.
Starting pitcher Zach Girrens took the win for the night with five strikeouts through four innings. A new face to the Bombers bullpen, Heston Van Fleet, pitched two innings against the Cane Cutters and added three strikeouts to his resume.
The Cane Cutters failed to rally after their two runs early in the game. Catcher Robie Rojas sent one run home for the Bombers in the eighth inning, shortly followed by a double by Correa, bringing left fielder Blake Kopetsky in to score the sixth and final run.
The Bombers will head back home to Cellucor Field for Shirt Off the Back Night presented by Brazos Bingo on Saturday July 12, where they will face off against the East Texas Pump Jacks at 7:05 p.m.
