Dixon Earns Franchise Record 105th Win

Bryan-College Station, TX (June 22, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers’ head coach Curtis Dixon became the all-time winningest coach in franchise history Sunday, earning his 105th victory as the Bombers (17-5) beat the Texas Marshals (4-17) 9-6.

“I’m more excited about next week and having the opportunity to clinch the first half two years in a row,” Dixon said. “For me to get this 105th win, it’s good coaches, it’s good players—it’s a good organization that allows me to get these guys in here.”

The Bombers fell behind early as starting pitcher Jake McDavid surrendered two runs in the first inning, but would respond with five unanswered points as McDavid went on to finish with eight strikeouts in his six innings of work.

“For not having his best stuff, then you fall down two to nothing—to go back out and put up five quality innings, it was good to see,” Dixon said. “That’s the Jake McDavid we know and we’ll have for the rest of the summer.”

The Marshals would add a run in the top of the eighth, cutting the deficit to 5-3, but the Bombers would put up four runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a pair of Marshals errors.

Making yet another attempt at a comeback, the Marshals scored three runs in the top of the ninth on a bases-loaded double by short stop Oliver Christensen, but reliever Blake Smith would strike out the final batter of the night to cement the Bombers’ sweep of their home stand.

Center fielder Matt Hilston was named the Bombers’ player of the game after going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“I was seeing the ball pretty good today,” Hilston said. “I was able to barrel some balls up and they were falling—not very hard—but I’ll take it.”

With Hilston’s 4-for-11 performance at Cellucor Field this week, the Bombers’ leadoff hitter was able to raise his batting average just above the .300 mark, currently sitting at .301.

“I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable—[I’m] taking more pitches, hitting more fastballs instead of curveballs, and trying to stay up the middle of the field a little more,” Hilston said.

The Bombers have an off day Monday before beginning a four game road trip Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Fabacher Field in Youngsville, La. against the Acadiana Cane Cutters.
