Bombers Slam Back-to-Back Homers to Seal Victory Over Strykers

Brett Kauten and Patrick McLendon

With strong arms on the mound and explosive bats at the plate, the Brazos Valley Bombers have been nearly unstoppable this season. Thursday night the Bombers defended their #1 TCL title by taking down the Woodlands Strykers 6-0, with 2 homeruns and nine strikeouts from the mound.

As usual, the Bombers pulled ahead early to get on the board with the lead. Third baseman Patrick McLendon and left fielder Brett Kauten started the action off with back to back singles up the middle. McLendon was able to steal second on a dropped strike then come home on a passed ball for the first run of the night. First baseman G.R. Hinsley later approached the plate to hit a single to right that allowed Kauten to score, bringing the Brazos Valley lead to 2-0 after one.

Pitcher Zach Curtis continued to keep the defense strong by pitching five straight innings with only one hit and six strikeouts. Kurt Giller, a junior from Oral Roberts University, relieved Curtis in the sixth and threw for one hit and one strikeout. In the bottom of the sixth the Bombers offense exploded at the plate. Shortstop Matt Eureste was able to reach first on a walk before McLendon ripped a strong two-run homerun over the left-center wall. On the very next pitch Kauten followed the trend by cranking his own solo homerun over the far leftfield wall to cause pure pandemonium in American Momentum Bank Ballpark. At the end of the sixth the Bombers had stretched their lead to 5-0.

The seventh inning continued to bring luck to the Brazos Valley as the Strykers were held at zero and the Bombers advanced their lead by one. Second baseman Horacio Correa III started things off with a double to center, then advanced to third on a sac fly by right fielder Herb Romero, and scored on a groundout by catcher Matt Smith. Shay Maltese came in to close out the game on the mound in the ninth and held the Strykers with one hit and two strikeouts. The night ended with the Bombers 6-0 shutout of the Woodlands Strykers to bring their season record to 12-1, a franchise best.

The Bombers take on the Woodlands Strykers again tomorrow night at 7:05pm at American Momentum Bank Ballpark. Friday is Turn Back the Clock night, where fans are invited to come get their favorite retired bobbleheads that are back for an encore performance!
