Bombers Honor Local Non-Profits as Team Drops a Heartbreaker in Extra Innings

The Bombers fell 4-3 in 11 innings to the Victoria Generals on Monday night as the team honored local non-profit organizations around the community for Community Appreciation Night. The Bombers will look to bounce back and win the series finale against the Generals on Tuesday night.

Bombers’ starter Andrew Massey ran into some trouble in the 2nd inning, as the Generals turned four singles into three earned runs, giving them a 3-1 lead. The Bombers brought the score to within one run in the 5th inning after Victoria shortstop Kevin Phillips threw a ball into the stands while trying to turn a double play.

The Bombers produced some 9th inning drama in the contest, as a pitch hit Jacob House to lead off the inning. Scott Arthur came in to pinch run for House, and advanced to second base after a balk by Victoria pitcher Covey Morrow. A sacrifice bunt by Casey Dykes sent Arthur to third base, and a wild pitch by Morrow brought a sprinting Arthur safely into home to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.

The Generals struck first in extra innings, as Phillips reached on an error before coming around to score on a single to left field to go up 4-3. That would prove to be the difference, as the Bombers couldn’t channel their magic from the 9th against Generals’ reliever Jared Hopper.

Notable individual performances for the Bombers include a two-hit day by centerfielder Greg Olson, who also scored a run. Randy Mann and Adam Smith came on in relief of Massey to provide six innings of one run baseball.

An update on the ongoing Damon CBA negotiations: ownership and the beloved announcer continue to get further and further apart as negotiations break down. Rumor has it that after learning of owner Uri Geva’s plans to lock him out should a deal fail to be reached, announcer Damon Slaydon plans to preemptively go on strike. Slaydon is now believed to be seeking the installment of a full bathroom in the press box, in order to provide him with an opportunity to achieve his request for more Chicken Express Sweet Tea. Geva was said to be indignant at the demand, feeling that Slaydon now wants to have his tea and drink it too. At this point a deal seems very far out of reach.

Special thanks to the following businesses for their support for Community Non-Profit Appreciation Night – Agnitek, Jones & Lowe Agency, C&J Barbecue, Brazos Bingo, The Physicians Centre Hospital, Brazos Valley Bank, and Infinity VIP. Without their contributions, this night couldn’t happen.

The Bombers will wrap up their series against Victoria Tuesday night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, where fans are encouraged to wear their flip-flops and swim trunks to celebrate Beach Night at the ballpark, which will feature a beach ball giveaway to the first 100 fans in the ballpark. The team will then take to the road for a week, first for a series against the East Texas Pump Jacks before landing in Victoria for four games against the Generals.
