Bombers Comeback in Bottom of the Tenth

Bryan-College Station, TX (June 16, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers overcame an early seven run deficit to force extra innings and win in walk off fashion 10-9 over the East Texas Pump Jacks in ten innings. With the win the Bombers move into a tie for first place in the Texas Collegiate League standings.

Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark was rocking again tonight as the Bombers celebrated Mardi Gras night presented by Planet Beach Contempo Spa. The Bombers let the good times roll with bead giveaways and zydeco music.

The Pump Jacks get things started early, scoring three in the first, one in the second, and three in the third to open a 0-7 lead. The Bombers answered with a Josh McElroy RBI in the third and a Wes Patterson double in the forth, making the score 7-2.

After a Tanner Toal solo home run in the sixth, the Bombers added four in the fourth on five consecutive hits by Isaac Nuti, McElroy, Ryan Morrow, Toal, and Rodarrick Jones, tying the score at 7-7. After a Pump Jacks solo home run in the eighth, the Bombers added one when Casey Dykes scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 8-8 heading into the ninth. The Pump Jacks got a runner to third, but he was left stranded their and the Bombers left Morgan Mickan, who came in to run after Toal’s leadoff single, stranded at second, sending the game to extra frames.

In the tenth, the Pump Jacks scored one on a sacrifice fly before a strange play occurred at the plate. The next batter belted a single to center, and the runner at second tried to come in to score. The throw was on time, but was dropped by the catcher, but in the process of avoiding the tag, the runner missed the plate. Thinking he had scored he ran into his dugout to celebrate only to be called out for leaving the field of play, but the Bombers still found themselves in a hole heading into the home half of the tenth, 9-8.

Cory Stooksbury worked an outstanding at bat, eventually firing a grounder through the gap on the right side to reach base. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout before scoring on a McElroy single. With the score tied at 9-9, the Bombers stayed aggressive, and McElroy stole second on the second pitch to Morrow. Morrow then singled to center and McElroy just beat the throw home, giving the Bombers the 10-9 victory.

The Bombers will be back in action Friday against the Victoria Generals in Victoria. The team will return home next Margaritaville Wednesday, June 23 to take on the Texas TomCats on Little League night.
