Pair of Skyhawks Join Forces with Bombers

Drew Mason's combination of speed and power should provide the Bombers with a big lift this summer

The Brazos Valley Bombers received a boost today as they announced the signings of two players from the University of Tennessee-Martin. Drew Mason and Drew Flaniken will add depth and experience to a young Bombers club looking for a Texas Collegiate League title in just its third year of existence.

Mason is no stranger to Bombers Head Coach Brent Alumbaugh, having played underneath him Franklin High School in Tennessee. The third baseman was named to two all-district teams and one mid-state team at Franklin in the midst of an impressive run that included three consecutive state tournament berths. Mason had a successful freshman campaign at Tennessee-Martin last summer hitting .280, including four multi-hit games in 23 starts. Mason has enjoyed a breakout sophomore season with Skyhawks, hitting .337 with 17 RBI and a team-high five steals in 29 games.

Flaniken figures to be an important piece in the Bombers bullpen this season. He transferred to Tennessee-Martin this year after helping Cleveland State achieve a national ranking last year as their setup man. Flaniken was nearly unhittable at Houston High School, posting a career record of 12-1 with a 1.78 ERA and two saves. With a team-high 17 appearances, he has demonstrated his endurance this season at Tennessee-Martin and should be able to make a large impact this summer with the Bombers.

The Bombers are members of the Texas Collegiate League, one of the nation’s premier summer collegiate circuits. Teams like the Bombers bring minor league baseball-style entertainment to communities throughout the country, giving some of the best college players a chance to further their careers in wood bat leagues in front of Major League scouts. The Bombers 48-game season begins on June 5 and runs through August 8, followed by the TCL playoffs and a championship series. Season tickets for the 2009 season are now on sale.
