Missed Opportunities Doom Bombers on Firework Friday Night

The Coppell Copperheads defeated the hometown Bombers in extra innings tonight to split the four game series. The loss prevented the Bombers beginning their first winning streak of the season and dropped them to 2-2 on the summer. The Bombers struggled to get their runners across the plate, leaving 12 on base in the game.

The Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and looked to be in cruise control after Trey Sperring doubled and scored to put the Bombers up 3-1, but let the Copperheads slither back into the ballgame. Brandon Godfrey pitched magnificently for the first six innings, but left a pitch over the plate that Austin Goolsby sent over the left-field fence to tie the game at 3. Three batters later, Bombers first baseman Dustin Dickerson made a great snag on a hard-hit ball down the first base line and threw to Shaun Siebert covering first, who made the relay home to double off Robert Barbosa to end the inning. The crowd roared in approval after the play and the Bombers seemed to have life, but missed several chances to take the lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, they had runners on first and second with Sperring up, but he popped out weakly to Coppell’s first baseman to end the inning. The Copperheads struck first in extra innings, when Todd Emr scored on a wild pitch by Siebert to take the 4-3 lead. With runners on second and third and no outs, the Bombers squandered their final chance to tie the game in the next frame as they could not come through with a clutch hit.

Despite the disappointing loss, Bombers fans were treated to quite a show after the game as a part of Fireworks Friday, which will come to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark each week. The Bombers are back home tomorrow as they square off against last season’s runner-up McKinney Marshals. Tyler Hammock, of the University of Houston will take the mound tomorrow for the Bombers as they try to get back in the win column. Game time is set for 7:05 pm and tomorrow will also be College Station Orthopedics Baseball Logo Giveaway. There will also be autographed baseballs from George Bush, last summer’s inaugural Bombers team, and much more! Come join us at the ballpark for the game!
