Future Bombers Stay Hot

Several future Bombers continued their hot hitting over the weekend, inspiring optimism that their bats will be sizzling come summertime.

The attack was led again by UT-Tyler’s Joseph Towns, who went 4-for-8 over the weekend to maintain his season average at .500. He opened the three-game set against Mississippi College with a stellar 3-for-4 outing on Friday, including a walk, four runs scored, and one RBI. In his first plate appearance of the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Towns was hit in the helmet by a breaking pitch, earning an early exit for precautionary reasons.

Texas A&M’s Darby Brown showed some versatility in getting his bat back into the lineup this past weekend. Normally a first baseman, Brown started the three-game series against visiting Florida patrolling right field. He didn’t let his new vantage point affect his hitting, though, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Saturday saw him back at his natural first base position – and still raking. Brown went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI. Despite an 0-for-3 showing on Sunday, Brown still pushed his average on the season to an impressive .346.

Temple’s Ryan Weber went 3-for-5 in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader against Buffalo to help lead a 17-hit Owls attack. Weber drove home two with a double in the eighth inning and also scored a pair of runs. In the first game of the twin bill, he drew a pair of walks and scored once.

Freshman hurler Hunter Carnevale continued to assert himself at the college level with a strong outing that resulted in a no decision. Carnevale went six innings against Washington in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader, allowing just two runs and no walks while striking out four. For the second time this season, he left the game in position to earn the win only to see the bullpen lose the lead, and ultimately the game. Carnevale still leads the Tigers staff with a pair of victories and carries a respectable 3.06 ERA.
