Bombers sweep Generals, head home for 4 game home stand

The Brazos Valley Bombers wrapped up a 4 game road trip by sweeping the Victoria Generals Tuesday night to improve their record to 3-1 on the season. This puts the Bombers half a game behind the East Texas Pumpjacks for first place in the Texas Collegiate League, leading into the home opener at the recently renamed American Momentum Bank Ballpark. Nick Smelser started a two out rally in the top half of the first inning by singling off General’s pitcher Covey Morrow. Morrow committed the first General’s error of the game and allowed Smelser to score from first. The Bomber’s kept the bats rolling in the top of the second when Brad Porras hit a homerun, extending the Bomber’s lead. The Generals fought back in the bottom of the second to tie the game up by scoring 2 runs off Bombers pitcher Logan Burch. After the Bomber’s bats went quiet in the top of the third, the Victoria Generals took the lead on a wild pitch and an RBI single. The Bomber’s couldn’t get anything going until the top of the seventh, when they began to rally with back to back singles to lead off the inning. They used old fashion small ball to advance the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. The Bombers capitalized on a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4. In the Bomber’s final at bat, they showed patience and determination at the plate by getting the first two hitters on base with a leadoff walk followed by a single. The Generals continued their struggles on the mound with another wild pitch that allowed Brad Porras to score giving the Bombers a 5-4 lead. The Bombers added on an insurance run when Quentin Urban drove in Matt Smith from third on an RBI single, giving the Bombers enough to put the Generals away. The Bomber’s top performer at the plate was Brad Porras, who went 2 for 3 with a homerun, a walk, scored the game winning run on a wild pitch. On the mound Luis de Jesus picked up the win for the Bombers by throwing four shutout innings in relief. The Bombers schedule continues with a four game homestand, including the Home Opener. Themes for the homestand include D-day, Wednesday June 6th, Pepper Night Sponsored by Chili’s, Thursday June 7th, Friday Night Fireworks June 8th, Strikeout Cancer Night June 9th, all games starting at 7:05.
