Bryan, Texas (June 21, 2022)- The Bombers settled into Edible Field tonight comfortably with pitcher Gabe Craig on the mound in the midst of a four game win streak. The offense started slow, but Craig did not disappoint, striking out a whopping nine hitters in five innings pitched, including a second inning of three straight strikeouts against three batters faced.
The Bombers couldn’t find much luck hitting behind Craig, all besides a couple of singles by outfielder Kameron Weil, thanks to excpetional pitching performance by Michael Barta of the Generals.
When Ross Fowler relieved Craig in the sixth, the Generals took advantage of fielding mishaps to take the lead 2-0. The Bombers did not back down when it came to be their turn to bat in the bottom half of the inning. After a leadoff double by third baseman Davis Powell, a downpour hit Edible Field, and a rain delay was called.
After about 20 minutes of waiting out the rain, the game resumed, and proceeded with a Jake Rabe walk. With two on, Weil bunted to move the runners over, where the Generals threw the ball away to score Powell and shift the runners to second and third base. A ground out by Cole Kracmer scored Rabe from third, and the Bombers tied it up at 2-2.
Spectacular pitching performances by Trent Tompkins and Patrick Hail keep the score tied until the bottom of the 9th. With two outs, outfielder Mike Adair forced a walk, in which Manager Brock Moss put the speedster Travis Chestnut into pinch run. With Wyatt Grant at the plate, Chestnut stole second base. The next pitch passed Generals catcher Chris Kean and bounced to the backstop, allowing Chestnut to advance home and walk it off.
The standout performances of Gabe Craig and Travis Chestnut allowed the Bombers to celebrate their fifth straight win. The Bombers travel to take on the Generals on their turf Wednesday night. They will then travel to Seguin on Thursday to face the River Monsters. The Bombers are back in action at Edible Field Saturday, June 22 with hopes of extending their terrific home record of 8-1 on the Baton Rouge Rougarous.
