Weimar, TX (July 20, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers overcame a1-5 deficit to defeat the Texas Tomcats 14-5 in Weimar on Tuesday night. The Bombers used 13 hits and 13 walks to earn a record breaking 24th win of the season, a new single season record for the Bombers.
The Tomcats’ Jake Fuller belted a solo home run in the second to start the scoring, giving the Tomcats a 0-1 lead. The Bombers’ Greg Olson RBI groundout brought home Cameron Dullnig after Rodarrick Jones’ double moved him to third, tying the score at 1-1. The Tomcats struck right back though, with two in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth to extend their lead to 1-5.
The Bombers looked to be in serious trouble until a power outage stalled play for some 20 minutes. After the outage, the Bombers got to work. Dullnig and Jones walked then Olson loaded the bases with a single. After a strikeout, Casey Dykes, Wes Patterson, and Morgan Mickan all drew RBI walks to pull the Bombers within one before a Jacob House RBI single tied the game at 5-5. The Bombers got four more in the inning on a two RBI single by John Cannon and RBI singles by Jones and Brennyn Smith to make the score 9-5.
The Bombers weren’t done yet though as they added five more in the eighth on a House two RBI single, a Cannon two RBI double, and a Jones RBI double extending the Bombers lead to 14-5. Michael Hilliard worked the last three innings of the game, earning a save and preserving the second win of the season for Mitchell Pitts. With the win the Bombers move to 24-13 on the season, maintaining their place atop the Texas Collegiate League standings.
The Bombers will be back in action at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Thirsty Thursday with $1 beer and $0.50 soft drinks as they take on the McKinney Marshals. The Bombers will be playing Backwards Baseball, starting the game in the ninth and working back to the first inning.
