Bryan/College Station, Texas (June 26, 2017)-The Brazos Valley Bombers have had some major success in the TCL. Not only have they been able to 4-peat, but also 4 former players were just drafted into the MLB. Here are the 4 players who will further their baseball careers:
Texas A&M University RHP Corbin Martin – Houston Astros (Round 2 – 56)
Martin had a dynamic season for the Aggies, helping lead them to their first College World Series since 2011. Ultimately, the Aggies fell to TCU and Louisville in Omaha to be taken down in the first two games. Throughout the regular season the Aggies showed some early signs of struggle, but went on a hot streak to end out their regular season. A&M definitely exceeded expectations this season with such a young roster and Martin was the first of five Texas Aggies to be taken in the MLB draft.
This season Martin had a record of 7-3 with a 3.35 ERA and 94 strikeouts. He was a reliable option for A&M throughout the season. Corbin played summer ball with the Bombers in 2015, where he helped the team win the TCL Title. He will now be able to be a solid acquisition for the Astros in the years to come.
San Diego State University LHP Brett Seeburger – St. Louis Cardinals (Round 10 – 304)
Brett has had experience as a reliever as well as a starter throughout his time with San Diego State (SDST). This season he had an impressive 10-3 record with a 4.53 ERA. He earned All-Mountain West first team honors and was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Year. The Aztecs CWS dreams ended in the hands of Long Beach State.
Seeburger played for the Bombers in 2016, where he was named a Second Team Summer Collegiate All-American by Perfect Game. That season he had a 5-1 record with a 1.01 ERA over 9 appearances. The Bombers won the TCL title in 2016 thanks to the help of Seeburger. The St. Louis Cardinals received a dominant pitcher who will be able to bring in support in the upcoming future.
Oklahoma State University CF Garrett McCain – Detroit Tigers (Round 10 – 305)
Oddly enough, McCain and Seeburger went back to back in the draft. The two played together for the BVB in 2016. The Big 12 Player of the Year contributed in a big way for the Cowboys this season, leading them to their first tournament championship since 2004. When it looked like they had no chance of making it to a Regional, OSU ignited a spark. The Cowboys were the first 8 seed to win the Big 12 tournament with a record of 30-25. Although losing to both Missouri State and Oral Roberts in the Super Regional, OSU had a productive season that nobody expected them to have.
This season Garrett led not only the team in batting average and hits, but also the Big 12 with a .388 average along with 87 hits. He also produced 43 RBIs and 4 HRs in 224 at bats. McCain was named to the second team All-American by Baseball America. This season McCain’s success significantly improved from last season’s, with a .203 average. Not only are the Detroit Tigers receiving a remarkable hitter, but a defensive juggernaut.
University of Arizona SS Louis Boyd – Seattle Mariners (Round 24 – 723)
Vancouver, Canada native Louis Boyd is coming off a notable season at the University of Arizona where the Wildcats finished with a record of 38-21 and 4th place in the Pac 10. Losing to Sam Houston State in the Lubbock Regional, the Wildcats will be losing a stud next season.
During his senior campaign Boyd hit .265 after missing about a month earlier in the season from tearing his UCL in his non-throwing elbow. In his final at-bat with the Wildcats, Boyd hit his first HR for the team, certainly going out with a bang. Boyd played for the Bombers in 2015, where he was teammates with newly drafted Astros player, Corbin Martin. Boyd is the second Wildcat drafted by the Mariners in the previous two years.
The Bombers will indeed construct more MLB talent in the future. With the production Brazos Valley has had in recent years, it’s no wonder to see that these players strived with their collective collegiate teams and now live their childhood dreams.
