Gamecocks add youth to Bombers

The Brazos Valley Bombers announced today the additions of two freshman Jacksonville State Gamecocks, a move that will bolster both the pitching staff and lineup. Outfielder Todd Cunningham and relief pitcher Jason Zylstra have made great contributions for Jacksonville State thus far and will undoubtedly work to improve an already strong Bomber team.

Cunningham’s combination of speed and hitting ability will be invaluable to Brazos Valley. He has already made his mark early in his college career, as he is currently third on the team with a .308 batting average. He also possesses great plate patience, having drawn thirteen walks through just sixteen games. In high school, Cunningham was named to the All-State team an incredible four times, including 1st team All-State three times. He will be a welcomed addition to the Bombers and should continue to develop into a superstar.

Zylstra brings versatility to the Bombers that rarely is seen in a pitcher- the ability to hit. In his senior year of high school, Zylstra batted .350 at the plate, while still managing to dominate the opposition from the mound, posting a 1.30 ERA, which led to All-Country honors. Zylstra has only pitched sixteen innings so far this season, but he is expected to get more opportunities as he gets more accustomed to pitching in college.

Both players will be able to step in and contribute immediately for a Brazos Valley team that should be able to compete for the Texas Collegiate League title this summer. The Bombers’ season begins on June 10th as they travel to Coppell to face the Copperheads. Season tickets are available, visit our website or call (979) 779- PLAY (7529).
