The Bombers enjoyed enormous success in their inaugural season last summer in large part because of the many contributions from their veteran players. The Bombers top four hitters from last summer are enjoying fantastic seasons this year with their respective teams, especially down the stretch with the playoffs right around the corner.
After leading all Bomber starters in hitting last season with a .283 batting average, Keith Stein has had an unbelievable spring with Sam Houston State, leading his team in batting average at .372 and 52 RBI. He also has hit nine home runs for the Bearcats, who are 31-22 on the year. The senior outfielder is a product of A&M-Consolidated, where he was selected to the All-State team his senior year.
The brother of current Bomber Jim McGonigle, Mark, has had a superb senior season at the University of New Orleans after leading the Bombers in RBI last summer. He has batted .311 with eight home runs and 44 RBI, leading the Privateers to a 38-13 record, including a 13 game current win streak.
Will Basom has had an outstanding season at UT-Permian Basin, leading the team in home runs, doubles and walks and finishing second in batting average and RBI. The senior first baseman from Lubbock, Texas hit a scintillating .354 with 12 homers, 44 RBI, 22 doubles, and 32 walks. He was a cornerstone in the Bombers infield last summer, leading the team in doubles with 12 and walks with 20.
A member of the TCL All-Star team last summer, Joseph Towns has had an excellent junior season with UT-Tyler this spring, batting .400 with nine homers, 17 doubles, and 45 RBI. UT-Tyler finished the year with a 36-9 overall record, including a 15-3 record in conference play. Towns was also selected to the Academic All-American team earlier this month after posting a 3.75 GPA.
The accomplishments of these players played a large part in the Bombers successful inaugural season last summer. The 2008 Bombers will try to follow in their footsteps as they make another run for the TCL Championship. With the season less than a month away, its time to make your summer plans because THE BOYS ARE BACK TOWN!
