Bryan/College Station, Texas (August 11, 2017) – Bombers win their 5th straight TCL Championship on a walk-off single from Ryan Benavidez in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Acadiana 3-2.
There are some things in sports that are meant to be, and after 8 regular-season walk-off wins for the Bombers, there was no better way to cap off the Drive For Five.
CJ Varela started on the mound for the Bombers and was faced up against Keith Meier, a left-hander who was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA against the Bombers this season.
After trading zeros all the way into the 5th inning, Ben Bailey delivered on a 2-strike count and singled into left field, Ryan Benavidez scored and the Bombers took a 1-0.
Acadiana then struck for a run in both the 6th and 7th to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, no-one on, and Chandler Morris at the plate with 2 strikes. Morris drove a solo-home run over the wall in left field to tie the game at 2-2 into the 8th.
In the 9th, with runners at 1st and 2nd base and no outs, Christian Vick was replaced by Brandon Ivey who go out of the jam by retiring the next 3 batters. The final out came off a base-hit to centerfield and a laser from Dalton Stark to nail the go-ahead run at home-plate. The entire dugout emptied with high-fives, yelling, and all sorts of emotion.
Afterwards, Jared Mang doubled down the line in left field to leadoff the inning. Then after a Chase Calabuig walk, Ryan Benavidez came to the plate.
Benny singled through the right side, and Mang rounded third to score the winning run, clinching the 2017 TCL Championship.
