Bryan-College Station, TX (August 1, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (37-13) and the East Texas PumpJacks (20-31) split a pair of seven-inning games in a doubleheader Friday, with the Bombers taking the first contest 7-6 and the PumpJacks the second 2-0.
“We did a lot of things uncharacteristic of us—not executing the ball in the air, not throwing strikes at times, but as you saw in the first game, the effort didn’t stop,” said head coach Curt Dixon. “That’s what allowed us in the seventh inning to walk it off with how poorly we played in the first six innings.”
The first game saw the Bombers jump out to a 3-0 lead after scoring a trio of runs in the second inning. East Texas would come back with six unanswered runs in the following three innings to take a three point lead.
The Bombers cut the deficit to 6-4 in the sixth inning and pushed another run across with one out in the seventh. With runners on first and second and two outs, right fielder Blake Kopetsky was able to drive in two runs on a single that sent the Bombers into the second half of the two game series fresh off of a walk-off win.
In the second game, the PumpJacks wasted no time in getting on the board as they put up two runs in the top of the first inning. The Bombers would keep themselves in the game and only surrender three total hits, but despite out hitting East Texas would be unable to muster another comeback en route to a series split.
“We’re guaranteed six games left,” Dixon said. “That’s [all] we need to get motivated to go; it’s about to come to an end. I feel like our club compared to a lot of other clubs—we don’t want it to end. We’re going to go enjoy the six nights that we get together and go play Bombers baseball.”
The Bombers will travel to Kilgore, Texas Saturday to face East Texas on their home turf for the first of a two game road trip. The first pitch for Saturday’s game is slated for 7 p.m. at Driller Park.
