Bombers Secure First Win of the 2021 Season

AMARILLO, Texas (May 29, 2021) — The Brazos Valley Bombers took the field Saturday night to close out the weekend series against the Amarillo Sod Squad. The Bombers rallied to showcase their teamwork and endurance.

Isaac Crabb started on the mound for the Bombers to kick off the game. Taylor Pendley, Mason Bryant, Jack Brinley, Grant Wood and John Cheatwood filled in for relief, solidifying the pitching rotation for the series. With a stellar performance by the pitching staff, the Bombers shutout the Sod Squad from earning runs until the seventh inning.

The Bombers started off hot in the first inning, with a ground ball out to center field by Mike Adair bringing Drew Collins and Zane Schmidt home.

The Sod Squad tried to tie up the game at the bottom of the fourth, but Schmidt and first baseman Shelby Becker came in clutch, preventing the two base runners from finding their way around the diamond..

The offensive push continued into the seventh when the Sod Squad pitcher walked three of the Bombers, including Schmidt and Becker. A pitching error with Adair in the batter’s box drove in three runs, advancing the score to 5-1 by the top of the eighth.

Cheatwood stepped in as pitcher at the top of the ninth, closing out the win for the Bombers by going four up, three down, locking up the final score at 6-1 Bombers.

The dugout at Hodgetown Stadium was so electric that even the heckling provided by fans could not stop the Bombers from showing the Sod Squad why the Brazos Valley is home to the TCL Champions.

“Go Bombers,” Zane Schmidt said. “There’s nothing else to it.”

The Bombers return to action Tuesday, June 1st for a two-game series against the Victoria Generals. Opening Day at Edible Field will follow on Thursday, June 3rd when the Baton Rouge Rougarou make the trek to the Brazos Valley. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. on Opening Day, fans can expect a night of fun and entertainment capped off by a firework show and a celebration of the little league teams of the Bryan-College Station area.
