Victoria, TX (August 10, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers fell to the Victoria Generals on Sunday in the first game of the Texas Collegiate League Championship Series in a close run, 6-5.
The Bombers were the first to draw blood in the game when shortstop Horacio Correa III scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Grady Caldwell in the first inning.
The Generals answered with a one run home run in the second inning, but the Bombers rallied to score three back to back runs in the fourth inning. Caldwell took home on a single by second baseman Jimmy Norris, followed by catcher Tucker Pennell on a base hit by left fielder Ford Moore. Correa rounded out the inning by sending center fielder Matt Hilston home on a single.
The Generals took the lead in the eighth inning on a single, after tying the game with three runs earlier in the fourth and fifth innings. The Bombers scored their final run in the ninth inning to tie the game again when Caldwell took first on a dropped third strike, allowing Moore to score. The Generals came back to score one final run in the ninth inning to win the game, 6-5.
Tyler Nurdin started on the mound for the Bombers with seven innings of work and three strikeouts. Cannon Chadwick, Zach Girrens, Andre Shewcraft and Nick Johnson all stepped out of the bullpen for the night.
In the 2013 Championship Series, the Bombers faced the Victoria Generals. The Bombers won the first and third games to take the title, but dropped the second game to the Generals in a shutout.
The Bombers return to Cellucor Field on Monday at 7:05 for the second game of the best of three series against the Victoria Generals for the Texas Collegiate League Championship.
