Bryan-College Station, TX (August 7, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (41-14) defeated the Texas Marshals (19-36) 6-4 Thursday. The victory came on the Bombers First Responders Night presented by TEEX, a night dedicated to all the first responders in the Bryan-College Station area.
“I’ll start with Lawson Vassar—his outing, six innings of scoreless ball, made a few plays on the mound—he did a good job putting zeroes on the board and then the rest of the bullpen came in and did their jobs. It was a good team win and good to get number 41.”
For the second night in a row, the Bombers scored five runs in the first two innings, three in the first on a two-RBI double by first baseman Grady Caldwell and a single from right fielder Dane Steinhagen, and two in the second on an error by the Marshals shortstop and a single from shortstop Jimmy Norris.
Starting pitcher Lawson Vassar went six scoreless innings and earned his second win of the season while surrendering just four hits.
“Everything felt really good tonight, my fastball was working pretty well,” Vassar said. “Our defense played really good behind us and it was just an all-around good team win tonight.”
The Bombers would add another run in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. The Marshals would rally in the eighth scoring four runs, but reliever Zach Girrens would strike out two in the ninth to halt the comeback, tying the Bombers’ single season strikeout record of 58 in the process.
The Bombers will end their series with the Marshals Friday in their final regular season game. Friday’s game begins at 7:05 p.m. at Cellucor Field.
