Bombers down East Texas 4-1 at Home

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 12, 2014) – The Brazos Valley Bombers (26-9) defeated the East Texas PumpJacks (10-25) 4-1 Saturday night, tying themselves for first place in the Texas Collegiate League with the Victoria Generals.

The Bombers drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning as left fielder Ford Moore scored on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Logan Nottebrok.

Bombers starter Cody Brannon would improve to 3-1 on the season, going 6 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out eight.

“I knew Brannon was going to give us a good outing—he’s had numerous good outings since we’ve had him,” said assistant coach Tyler Gillum. “It was pretty smooth sailing for him the whole way, and then the bullpen came in and did a great job.”

Neither team would push across another run until the eighth, where Bombers shortstop Horacio Correa III would shoot a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Blake Kopetsky and Jimmy Norris. An error by the PumpJacks’ catcher on the same play would allow Correa to advance to third while Matt Hilston scored to give the Bombers a 4-0 lead.

“I felt like we needed to score some more runs to give us some cushion,” Correa said. “I got a fastball inside and I was able to drive it to right field.”

Right-hander Jake McDavid came in in the top of the ninth to strike out two as the Bombers went on to win their second consecutive game.

The Bombers and the PumpJacks will square off at Cellucor Field again Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. Sunday’s game will feature Baseball Bingo presented by Brazos Bingo, where fans can win prizes based on the on-field action.
