Friday night, in the second game of the season, the Bombers sealed their sweep in Acadiana with a 4-0 victory over the Cane Cutters. Now 2-0 in the season, the Bombers already have their eyes on the TCL Championship.
Brazos Valley got on the board immediately in the first inning when right fielder Graham McIntyre knocked in second baseman Patrick McLendon, who reached the bag earlier with a walk. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the third, when McIntyre earned his second RBI of the night by bringing first baseman G.R. Hinsley home. Bombers pitcher Michael Walker continued to be a force on the mound in the bottom of the third with two strikeouts and no hits.
In their time at the plate in the top of the fourth the Bombers continued to widen the gap by putting yet another run up on the board. Designated hitter Matt Smith, who earlier in the day was battling illness, hit a solid single that scored catcher Conner McMullin to make the score 3-0. Later, Walker continued his defensive hot streak as the Cane Cutters went three for three to end the inning.
After an Acadiana pitching change in the top of the fifth the Bombers were unable to help their own cause. Cane Cutters also remained scoreless as they left two on base and chalked up another strikeout for Walker. The sixth inning brought in the fourth run of the game for the Bombers when short stop Matt Eureste reached on a single and later came home when a wild pitch got past Acadiana catcher Vaughn Shapen. Walker earned two more strikeouts in the bottom of the inning as the Cane Cutters were still unable to score and left one on base.
Acadiana posed a threat in the bottom of the eighth when a double, walk, and single loaded the bases, but great fielding from the Bombers saved the inning and stranded all three runners. Acadiana made their second pitching change of the night in the top of the ninth, as a last-ditch effort to stop the Bombers. Center fielder Blake Kopetsky managed to reach first on a walk, but was unable to score as the next three Bombers were all immediately retired. With the score at 4-0, the Bombers held their lead on defense and closed the game with another strikeout for Walker and some key fielding in the infield.
The Bombers continue the action on the road against the Texas Marshals tomorrow at 7:05pm. Opening day at American Momentum Ballpark will be on June 4th versus the Woodland Strykers.
