No-Hitter Powers Helms To TCL Pitcher Of The Week Award

Brazos Valley Bombers starting pitcher Clint Helms has been named the Texas Collegiate League Pitcher of the Week for July 10 to 15, the TCL office announced today.

Helms made one start last week to earn the award, but he certainly made the most of it. Taking the hill for the second game of Tuesday’s makeup doubleheader in Coppell against the Copperheads, Helms authored the first complete game no-hitter in TCL history. The hard-throwing righty allowed four walks and struck out three over seven innings to help write his name in the record books. The 1-0 victory also propelled the Bombers into sole possession of first place for the first time this season.

The win was Helms first this season, in which he has made three starts and seven total appearances. The Flint, Texas, native, who redshirted this spring as a freshman at Louisiana Tech, has held opposing hitters to a .216 batting average.

The Bombers take their Speaker Division lead on the road today to visit a pair of Hornsby Division opponents. The B’s will take on the Mineral Wells Steam tonight at 7:05 pm, then make their way to Wichita Falls to face the Roughnecks tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Both games can be heard on The Zone, KZNE-AM 1150.

The B’s will return to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Wednesday for another makeup game against the Copperheads. The Bombers will also host a pre-game matchup of baseball teams representing the Bryan fire and police departments. The gates will open at a special 5 pm time, with the police vs. fire battle beginning at 5:30. The Bombers first pitch will be at 7:05.

Thursday marks the final Thirsty Thursday of the Bombers regular season. Fans will be able to enjoy one dollar draft beers and 50-cent small soft drinks throughout the game, courtesy of Jack FM.

Friday might just be the biggest blockbuster to date. After setting the league single-game attendance record on Opening Night, the Bombers have seen the mark taken back by the McKinney Marshalls. The B’s have vowed to write a new record in the books on Friday, July 20, and need the help of Bombers fans everywhere. The team wants to pack the park and has booked not one, but two big promotions to make it possible. Friday will be Fireworks Friday, so the game will be followed by a spectacular fireworks show. During the game, Reggy! The Entertainer, the biggest, baddest, purplest party dude on the planet, will visit to make it a night to remember.
