Joseph Towns Named TCL Player Of The Week

Brazos Valley Bombers third baseman Joseph Towns has been named the Texas Collegiate League’s D-Bat Player of the Week, the TCL league office announced Tuesday morning.

Towns earned the award for the week of June 11 to June 17, during which he batted .529 (9-for-17) in four games. The University of Texas-Tyler sophomore hit a pair of home runs and added eight RBI in leading the Bombers to a 3-1 record during the week.

For the season, Towns’ numbers are just as impressive. He leads the league with a .485 batting average and 16 hits, and he’s tied for the league lead in home runs with two. He also ranks among league leaders in slugging percentage (.697, second), runs scored (8, tied for second), and RBI (10, third). Towns has at least one hit in all but one of the Bombers games this season.

The impressive numbers should come as no surprise for Towns, who had a tremendous season for the Patriots this spring. Towns batted .396 in helping UT-Tyler to a national-best 37-1 record and the American Southwest Conference’s East Division crown. He was named second team all-conference for his breakout season.

The Bombers have a day off on Tuesday before returning home for games on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday is Radio Alegria Night with the Bombers, as Brazos Valley hosts the Denton Outlaws with the help of Radio Alegria AM 1240. Weatherford’s visit to Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark on Thursday marks the second Bombers Thirsty Thursday of the season, featuring 50-cent 16-ounce soft drinks and one dollar 12-ounce draft beers, sponsored by Jack FM.
