Brazos Valley Bombers first baseman Will Basom was named the TCL Player of the Month for June, the Texas Collegiate League announced today. He picks up the award just a few days after being named a reserve on the Speaker Division squad for the TCL All-Star Game.
Basom’s award is the third individual honor picked up by a Brazos Valley player this season. Third baseman Joseph Towns was named Player of the Week in the second week of the campaign, and pitcher Casey Whitmer is the reigning TCL Pitcher of the Week.
One look at TCL leaderboard demonstrates how Basom earned Player of the Month honors. The Lubbock native tops the Bombers with a .345 average that ranks among the league leaders. His 20 hits and six doubles are both best in the TCL. He has also come through in the clutch, smashing what proved to be the game-winning home run to cap a Bombers rally against the Mineral Wells Steam on June 14.
That Basom knows his way around the plate should come as no surprise, judging from his spring at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. The junior transfer batted an incredible .515 for the season, slugging .736 with a .571 on-base percentage. He won the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week award twice and he was named second team all-conference.
The Bombers go on the road for the next three games before beginning a four-day layoff for the All-Star break. Six Bombers players will be taking part in the TCL All-Star Game on Monday, July 9 – Whitmer and Towns have been named starters, and Basom is joined by pitcher Tyler Davis, designated hitter Mark McGonigle, and outfielder Keith Stein as reserves.
Brazos Valley will return to action for a blockbuster three-game stretch at home, featuring Thirsty Thursday on July 12, Fireworks Friday on July 13, and Bombers T-shirt Giveaway Night on July 14.
