The sun was out for a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark. In fact, the day seemed almost perfect, spoiled only by the Colleyville LoneStars, who delivered a 7-1 defeat to the Bombers to close out Brazos Valley’s first-ever homestand.
The LoneStars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. They added a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to chase Bombers starter Clint Helms. In his second appearance of the season, Helms struggled with his control, walking five in 4.2 innings.
With the Bombers bullpen undermanned because of the NCAA playoffs, head coach Kevin Moulder looked to get the most of an increasingly versatile roster. Lefty Tyler Davis closed out the fifth and pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh before handing the ball over to a pair of position players. Shortstop Ryan Weber threw a scoreless eighth, and first baseman Will Basom gave up a pair of hits and a run in the ninth.
Brazos Valley managed 10 hits to Colleyville’s 9, but had less success pushing runners across the plate. Joseph Towns drove in Ryan Weber with a single in the sixth inning for the team’s only run. Towns went 2-for-4 on the afternoon, his third two-hit outing in four games. Mark McGonigle had a breakout performance, going 3-for-4 with a double. He also threw out Cameron Monger at the plate with a perfectly delivered strike from right field in the third inning.
The Bombers go on the road for a pair of games beginning Monday, visiting the Wichita Falls Roughnecks followed by the Denton Outlaws. The team returns to the Brazos Valley on Thursday, June 14, for the first of four Thirsty Thursday promotions presented by Jack FM. Fans can enjoy fifty-cent 16-ounce soft drinks and one dollar 12-ounce draft beers as they watch the Bombers take on the Mineral Wells Steam. The Steam will be back again on Friday, June 15, for Fireworks Friday; after the game, fans will enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, courtesy of College Station Medical Center.
