News and notes from Bombers near and far…
Over the weekend, Darby Brown and Texas A&M continued their conference schedule with a three-game set against the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers. After going 1-for-7 in the first two games, Brown was instrumental in the Aggies winning the rubber match. With the score tied and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Brown lined a single to right field to put the winning run on base. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, he hustled home on a Luke Anders single to give A&M the victory. For the game, Brown went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. He was also hit by a pitch twice on Sunday and three times over the weekend, pushing his team-leading total to seven for the season. In fact, Brown holds the distinction of reaching first base more times by being hit than by a walk (seven to six).
Joseph Towns and the UT-Tyler Patriots continued their amazing unbeaten run with a thorough dismantling of University of the Ozarks this weekend. Towns continued his success at the plate by going a combined 4-for-13 with 5 runs scored and an RBI during the three-game series at Lonnie Qualls Field. The sweep pushed the Patriots record to an unblemished 26-0, and Towns numbers continue to be just as impressive. He ranks among the team’s top four in batting average (.454, second on the team), hits (44, first), runs batted in (28, second), total bases (61, second), slugging percentage (.629, third), and runs scored (30, tied-fourth).
The Temple Owls and Ryan Weber had a closely contested three-game series this weekend against Big Five rival LaSalle. Though the Owls managed just one victory, Weber continued to impress, going 5-for-15 over the weekend with 4 runs scored and 2 RBI. The Cypress, Texas native has started every game this season and leads the team in batting average (.341), runs scored (21), and on-base percentage (.410). He is also tied for first on the team in hits (31) and runs batted in (15).
