Well, um, we meant to say, “First inning”.
On Wednesday night, during Game 1 of the World Series, the Bombers, Brazos Valley Bank, and Boston’s Pizza were ready to give away $25,000. All that we needed was Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett to strike out the Colorado Rockies in order in the top of the third inning.
Unfortunately, we forgot to send the memo to Beckett.
A favorite to win this year’s American League Cy Young Award, Beckett came out firing. He struck out the side in the first inning and whiffed two more Rockies in the second. But Rockies designated hitter Ryan Spilborghs led off the third inning by lining out to second, dashing the hopes of Bombers fans everywhere. Beckett set down Colorado in order in the third but without a strikeout, even though he went on to fan nine Rockies in seven innings pitched. In fact, the third was one of just two frames in which Becket didn’t manage a strikeout.
What Do The Bombers And The Yankees Have In Common?
The answer is, both are looking to replace their manager or head coach. But while the Yankees suffer the slings and arrows of letting go their on-field icon, Joe Torre, the Bombers are taking action.
On Monday, October 29, the Bombers will make officially announce the team’s new head coach.
Kevin Moulder, who guided the Bombers to a playoff spot as their ever first head coach, has taken a position as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Saint Louis University. Such a prominent position with a Division I program is a great step for Moulder, but it means that he will be unable to return to the Brazos Valley next summer.
